The Competition

A first of its kind
The Shanghai Conservatory of Music and the Savonlinna Music Academy are organizing a groundbreaking competition for pianists, taking place from 20 to 24 August 2025 in Savonlinna, Finland (video round) and from 28 October to 9 November 2025 in Shanghai, PRC. The competition is open to everyone over the age of 15.
This unique competition challenges contestants to showcase their versatility, not only as solo pianists but also as chamber musicians and Lieder pianists. Additionally, contestants must rehearse, perform, and conduct from the keyboard a Mozart concerto and a compulsory piece for piano and chamber orchestra by a Chinese composer.
“The competition aims to recognise talented individuals who possess a deep musicality and the skill to fully utilise a pianist's abilities. It highlights those who can navigate life's spiritual challenges through music.”
Ralf Gothóni, Chairman of the Jury and Initiator of the competition
Christoph Eschenbach speaking about the competition

The story of a musical cooperation Between China And Finland

In 1985, the directors of the Savonlinna Opera Festival initiated negotiations with the China Central Opera for their first joint presentation on a European opera stage. This collaboration culminated in a highly successful visit in 1988. In 1992, a group of Finnish friends of Chinese culture, with the support of the Finnish industry, began discussions about organizing a festival in Beijing. The first Forbidden City Music Festival took place in 1996, followed by a second edition in 1998, both featuring high-level international and Chinese instrumentalists. In 2022, the Savonlinna Music Academy had the pleasure of initiating a collaboration with the Shanghai Conservatory. This partnership quickly flourished, resulting in master classes and concerts at both institutions. Most significantly, it laid the foundation for discussions about a competition in holistic musicianship. Through these activities, two major Chinese cities and a small Finnish town have demonstrated the unifying power of musical culture, fostering mutual understanding and highlighting the importance of shared values in life.
